Museum of Mediterranean Conquests

SARDINIA, ITALY

The surrounding landscape serves as an inspiration for the physical expression of the additions.

The site is organized according to the functionality of the old fort and its additions over time. Guests arrive by trail from either the sea at the lighthouse or from the coastal town. At the base of the hilltop fortress is the library where texts are archived for present and future research. The spatial layout of the hilltop fortress lends itself to being adapted into a museum. It has many small spaces that form a sequence for the gallery experience. At one end is an outlook point and at the other the restaurant provides views over the bay to the south. At the farthest reaches, a new memorial to the veterans of conflict juts out of an escarpment in the north with views out to the Mediterranean sea. This space of remembrance isolates itself for quiet solitude and pensive reflection.
